Update – The Sodium Valproate Inquiry
Aug 2024
Since our last meeting with the Chairperson of the Sodium Valproate Inquiry, which was held in July, the chairperson has informed OACS Ireland that she is working diligently in relation to our supports for the Inquiry, and she will revert as soon as she has an update.
The Establishment
At our last meeting with Ms O’Flaherty we spoke about the Establishment of the Inquiry. The Inquiry is in the establishment phase and the Chairperson is determining staffing, supports, ICT and communications. The DOH has informed OACS Ireland that their role is to assist with setting up the Inquiry, to secure a premises and procure required infrastructure. OACS sought a timeframe for the Inquiry, it is estimated that evidence from Stakeholders will begin to be gathered in October, with evidence from families being accepted in approximately February 2025. These dates are not set in stone and are subject to change.
Supports
A discussion on support to ensure maximum participation took place. OACS outlined the potential volume of documents to be examined and submitted for Phase 1. Ms O’Flaherty is considering OACS submission on supports including how they will be communicated, Ms O’Flaherty also acknowledged the work done by OACS already. It was agreed that this will be again discussed at the next meeting. We are now waiting for the Chairs latest proposal on supports.
Communications Campaign
OACS had a discussion on how the Inquiry will engage with and support people to understand including an awareness campaign. The Chairperson set out that she is working on the best approach for communications including information booklets redirecting people to Inquiry website, phone, and email for detail on supports, e.g. legal, counsellors. Discussions on how meetings will take place, how they will be recorded and supported as families to facilitate full engagement and also acknowledged the importance of listening to those affected. Counsellors discussed with OACS outlining the importance of counsellors with a knowledge of FVSD. At our last meeting in July, it was agreed to meet again in 4 – 6 weeks and a date will be communicated to us. We look forward to our next meeting.
