Jo Campion Unites Mothers Affected by Sodium Valproate
OACS Ireland and their members recently attended it’s second meeting with Jo Campion, Clinical Psychologist, which served as a gathering for mothers and families impacted by valproate exposure. The purpose of the session was to provide a space where participants could openly share their experiences, challenges, and wants for the future. The Chairperson of the Sodium Valproate Inquiry was able to attend the meeting briefly. She introduced herself to families and offered a warm welcome to all who attended. This thoughtful gesture set a positive tone for the rest of the meeting and reinforced the supportive nature of the session. The Chair went on to inform families that an information pack containing resources and guidance would be available at the end of the meeting to support families’ participation in the Inquiry.
The environment was compassionate and respectful, ensuring every attendee felt heard and valued. It was clear that word had spread about the September meeting. As a result, there was a significant turnout of our members for the November gathering. Each mother was treated with the respect and compassion they deserved. Our members engaged in open dialogue, discussing both past and present experiences regarding the effects of valproate exposure on their children and family unit and some mothers got extremely emotional. Jo, presence was instrumental in fostering a warm and supportive atmosphere, where trust and mutual respect prevailed. Her empathy and professionalism ensured that every mother felt understood and supported.
The recent November session was a truly astonishing event, which was marked by the significant high change in numbers which showed incredible dedication of members who travelled from all over Ireland. It is as simple as this unless you experience these meetings you will not know what you have missed. OACS Ireland would like to extend our gratitude and appreciation to everyone who attended and contributed so openly.
Finally, OACS Ireland extends its sincere gratitude to Jo Campion and the Chair of the Sodium Valproate Inquiry for organizing these greatly needed sessions. The Inquiry will hold its next meeting with for the mothers in February 2026 and long may they continue.
